Center of Excellence in Alternative and Complementary Medicine for Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases is the leader in research focusing on herbal medicine, probiotic, and alternative treatments for GI and liver diseases in human and animal models such as alcoholic hepatitis, fatty liver, hepatocellular carcinoma, peptic ulcer, H.pylori infection, gastric cancer, colitis, and pancreatitis etc. Research outcomes provided on basic for the new knowledge, integration, and clinical applications as the national and international references.

Strategic Objectives

  • To be the leading center of excellence that provides scientific evidence for the use of complementary and integrative medicine in gastrointestinal and liver diseases with the aim for future applications to medical practice
  • To create the nationally and internationally-recognized medical research in the field of Gastrointestinal Physiology

Target in 3 Years

Research Area:

  • Have internal and external research fund.
  • Presentation of research findings at national and international conferences at least twice a year.
  • Receipt of awards for presenting research findings at national and international conferences, at least one award per year.
  • Publication of research papers in international academic journals at Tier 1 and Q1 levels, with a minimum of 6 papers per year.
  • Collaboration on research projects with other partner institutions.

Teaching and Education:

  • At least 2 students of Master's and Ph.D. programs in Medical Science express interest in conducting research at the center.
  • Regularly set research seminars, lab meetings, or participation in relevant training sessions.

Research Highlights

  • Develop animal models of gastrointestinal and liver disease for the study of disease pathophysiology and potential treatment, such as models of alcoholic hepatitis, metabolic associated fatty liver disease, H.pylori induced gastritis, NSAIDs induced gastritis, gastric cancer, and acute pancreatitis
  • Evaluate the use of complementary and alternative medicine in the treatment of gastrointestinal and liver disease, such as curcumin, aloe vera, genistein, and probiotics
  • Collaborate with other departments and faculties both inside and outside Chulalongkorn University in the conduction of research projects
